Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,844 at the 2010 census. The main thoroughfare in Keene is Main Street. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Keene was Nicholas White in 1768. white's son John moved to Keene from Cornwall in 1776 and began to cultivate land around what would become downtown Keene. In 1814, George Washington visited Keene on his way from Portsmouth to Boston and stopped at White's home for dinner. In 1819 Moses Green settled here after purchasing of land west of the Merrimack River near present day Union Square/Lodge Road and south of where Main Street now intersects US Route 1 (New Hampshire Turnpike). He built a sawmill and gristmill on the river which he operated until his death in 1839. The history of the USAF's deployed gift program began in 1947. The Air Force was authorized to provide gifts to its members, and Lt. General James H. Webb, Commander-in-Chief of the USAF, devised a plan to do so. He assigned Brigadier General Harry Biddle as the first director of the Gift Program Office at Wright-Patterson AFB. The first gifts were items such as radios, phonographs, and cameras for members stationed overseas. In 1949, Gifts for Honor were introduced into the program and became available to all servicemembers on an honor basis only. The program grew even larger in 1951 when it was decided that all servicemembers should be able to receive gifts from their friends and families as well. This resulted in the establishment of Regional Gift Offices throughout the USAF. In 1957, Gifts for Special occasions were added to the program which allowed servicemembers to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays or marriages with unique gifts that reflected their individual personality or style. These special occasion gift programs continued until 1991 when they were discontinued due to budget reasons. Today, the USAF's deployable gift history remains significant because it helpsService members stay connected with their loved ones while they are deployed outside of America and across global battlefields aroundthe world - something that cannot be done through mail or other traditional methods!
