The National Guard of the United States is a national military force composed of volunteer soldiers from all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. The National Guard was first activated in 1790 to support the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The guard has since been used in a variety of roles, including peacekeeping, disaster relief, and ceremonial events such as Super Bowls and presidential inaugurations. This sense of being called upon grew as America entered World War I in 1917 and then into World War II. During these wars there was constant mobilization of resources both men and women including members of the Guard. Today there are over 26 million active duty military personnel in the United States Army, Navy and Air Force with an additional 4 million reservists who are available for service at any time. These numbers do not include civilians who may be mobilized for national security tasks such as guarding important infrastructure or participating in anti-terrorism operations. One way that National Guardsman contribute to their communities is through their participation in local events such as Fourth of July celebrations or Memorial Day ceremonies. A related function of the Guard is providing support during natural disasters like earthquakes or hurricanes which can cause extensive damage to infrastructure or homes near military installations. The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1795. The first national guard unit was organized on July 4, 1795, when President George Washington authorized the organization of a regiment of Mounted Militia to protect American citizens in New York City. The militia units were disbanded in 1802, but were reactivated on November 16, 1861 as the 1st Rhode Island Regiment under command of Major General Robert H. Hindman. The regiment served until 1865 and was then mustered out on February 9, 1865. In 1933, the Rhode Island National Guardsmen who had served during World War I re-enacted their colors at Brown University for the centennial of that war and also raised money for veterans’ causes. From 1933 until 1990, both regiments conducted annual parades through Providence to commemorate those events and raise money for veteran charities. In 1990, both regiments united as one brigade under command of Brigadier General Timothy J. McCarthy and continued to parade through our city each year until 1994 when they unified again as two brigades under Brigade General Jeffrey Sauer with headquarters located in Warwick (now Cranston).
