Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Webster County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Dover is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1726 and named their settlement after George Washington's home state of Virginia, but soon changed their minds and renamed it Portsmouth when they realized that no Virginian had ever lived in Dover. The town was founded on April 15, 1771 by militiamen from the British army who were stationed at Portsmouth during the American Revolution. By 1800, Dover had a population of 2,500 people and was one of the most important commercial towns in New England. In 1814–1815, Dover became an incorporated village under chancery jurisdiction with its own board of selectmen. During World War II as part of the United States military effort against Japan, Dover played an important role as a supply center for troops fighting in Europe. The town received its first post office on July 26, 1941; it has been operating continuously since then. On December 7th 1954 voters passed a resolution to secede from Massachusetts due to disagreements over education reform legislation that year being enacted by the state government without their consent; this led to the name change to "Dover Township" effective January 1st 1955 despite protests from residents who wanted to keep their full name given back to them as part of municipal autonomy within Webster County (still governed by selectmen).
