The Dover Air Force Base is home to the 9th Bomb Wing, which has a long history of deploying gift-giving programs. The wing was established on 1 October 1943 as the 319th Bombardment Group, stationed at Anacostia Army Air Field, Maryland. On 15 February 1945, it was redesignated the 319th Bombardment Wing and moved to Dover in Delaware. The 9th Bomb Wing began its gift history on 4 December 1951 when it donated a C-47 Skytrain for use at Dover Air Force Base. The first gift from the 9 BW was an A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, given to them by North American Aviation Company. Over time, gifts have been exchanged between the 9 BW and other organizations at Dover AFB. In 2007, the wing gave a Boeing 727 Airliner to Sun Valley Airport in Sunsville, Utah in commemoration of their donation of two Boeing 747s to that airport five years earlier. On 3 November 2009, during Operation Neptune's Spear – Iraq's response to US military action against Saddam Hussein – the wing donated four C-130H Hercules transport planes and eight crew members for use by Iraqi air force officers evacuating citizens from Baghdad during that time period. Additionally, on 10 July 2010 during Hurricane Irene (2010), they gifted three McDonnell Douglas MD-80Ms Airliners to New Castle County Airport in Delaware as well as a United Parcel Service UPS truck filled with food supplies for Marines deployed in Afghanistan.

The first settlement in this area was made by English colonists on April 12, 1768 when they landed on what is now Dover Beach from their ship "Nemo". The town became a part of Portsmouth when that city was renamed Portsmouth in 1795. Dover experienced rapid growth during the 19th century as an agricultural center due to its location along Route 9 east of Boston and its access to navigable water supplies. In 1854, Dover became the capital of New Hampshire with Charles Sumner becoming its first governor. The town's prosperity declined after World War II due to economic decline in Europe and US military installations overseas; however, it has rebounded since 2000 with strong investment by local businesses in new technology firms and other industries. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.

Dover is a town in Warren County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,718 at the 2010 census. Dover was founded in 1768 by General George Washington and his army as a trading post on the south shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. The post continued to be used by the U.S. military until 1969 when it was closed due to budget cuts. Dover reopened in 1978 as an agricultural community with a population of about 1,000 until its closure again in 2001 due to budget cuts. After years of planning and investment, Dover has once again revived as an agricultural community with a population of about 2,500 today. The town's early history can be found through artefacts discovered during archaeological excavations conducted by the NH Department of Transportation and Planning beginning in 1984 at three sites around town: White Horse Pond (now known as Fishing Pond), Beech Hill Road (now called North Street), and Cross Roads Road (now part of Route 9). These excavations unearthed artifacts from both pre-colonial times up until approximately 1800 A.D., including Mississippian pottery shards dating back to ca 1000 BC; spear points from the Iowan period; and flint tools from the Paleo-Indian Period dating back between 8800 BC and 9000 BC! In 1810 when General John Stark's forces invaded New England, he made camp at Great Meadow near what is now downtown Dover while he prepared for battle against British troops under Sir Richard Bourke Jr.. The Battle of Boylston Hill took place just east of where today's First Selectman Building stands on South Main Street - possibly one of the bloodiest battles ever fought in America! At that time there were over 20 fatalities on both sides! After General John Stark's victory at Boylston Hill, many settlers arrived seeking land within reach of Boston - among them were Captain Samuel Huntington who donated land southeast of present day Portsmouth alongpresentday Middle Road for the construction of Fort Constitution which later became Dartmouth College; Elias Boudinot who donated land northwest of present day Portsmouth along present day West Street for Congregationalist church construction; Major John Barker who donated land southwest cornerofpresentday Eastown BoulevardandWest Greenwood Avenue for Schoolhouse Grove school; André-Jacques Dumont de L'Isle who donated 5 acres adjacentto present day American Falls located northwestofpresentday Goffstown; Pierre Julien du Pont de Nemours who contributed 10 acres adjoining present day Goffstown located east Ofpresentday Nashua) In 1768 General George Washington led an expedition up into Maine to purchase goods needed for his Army operation against Britain that would lead to independence from Great Britain! Heading downriver from Kingston upon Hull they arrived at what is now Plymouth Rock late October or November 1768 after making stops at two small settlements before reaching what is now Dover on December 12th.- From here they began their march westward along river routes taking different forks before arriving at Lake Winnipesaukee late January or February 1769.- This area had been disputed between Patriot militiamen under Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Warren(the future Governor Arthur Conan MacDougal)and Loyalist militiamen under Colonel John Sullivan since prior to British Invasion
