The national guard has been in Concord, New Hampshire since the Revolutionary War. The first national guard unit was raised in Concord on December 12, 1775, when a detachment of British regulars under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Burgoyne arrived in town to support American forces fighting against British General Howe. The first national guard unit in Concord was called the "Concord militia." It consisted of thirteen men and served for two months before disbanding. In 1778, a new squad from Concord was re-raised and served for six months. The regiment was then disbanded again. In 1779, a new regiment of Hessian mercenaries from Germany was hired by the Americans to help protect Boston from French attackers. These troops were known as "the Concord Regiment." The regiment numbered about seventy-five men and served for three years until it too disbanded. In 1783, a new regiment of Hessian mercenaries from Germany was hired by the Americans to help protect Portsmouth from French attackers. This regiment numbered about ninety-four men and served for two years until it also disbanded. In 1785, another group of German mercenaries were hired by the Americans to help protect Manchester from French attackers. This group numbered about fifty-six men and served for one year before disbanding as well. By 1800, there were only two companies left active in Concord's National Guard units: one company had been raised in 1801 and another company had been raised in 1802 but both units eventually disbanded as well due to lack of manpower or financial problems).

Polk appointed a committee to study ways to improve the National Guardsman’s ability “to protect our citizens from insurrection or invasion on any account whatever.” After studying numerous reports option was selected for creation of what would eventually become the National Guard: 1) A separate Militia Regiment for each state; 2) That members may not serve slavery; 3) That officers must be chosen by state legislatures rather than by commanders-in-chief; 4) That Drill Begun at least once monthly; 5) Membership open only to men age 21 years old who are residents of their state at time application is made; 6) that no woman may enlist until she reaches 25 years old (this prohibition was lifted in 1915). The first unit raised under these new regulations was called “The Mounted Riflemen’s Battalion” which consisted mostly unemployed men from New York City area who had been model soldiers during the Mexican War (1846-48). On July 14th 1861, Congress passed an act authorizing four regiments – one each from Alabama (Jefferson Davis), Arkansas (Samuel Jompkins), Georgia (John Covington), and Louisiana (Félix Le Roy – later became Napoleon Bonaparte). These regiments were organized at Harpers Ferry on September 15th 1861 under Colonel Augustus Thornton with command of Company D (the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment). The battalion began drill on October 8th 1861 at Great Meadows near Harpers Ferry under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer commanding company G! It should be noted that both companies were originally infantry battalions commanded by lieutenant colonels! On November 7th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army northward towards Fredericktown MD while LtCol Custer's Battalion guarded Virginians at Great Meadows against possible Confederate attack east of Mason Dixon Line
