Concord was founded by Native Americans in 1763 and became part of the Massachusetts Colony in 1688. The town was platted in 1837, and became a city in 1912. Concord is located on the north side of the Connecticut River, about 25 miles (40 km) west of Boston. The first Europeans to visit Concord were French Canadians who went there to trade with the natives in 1763. In 1801, US President James K. Polk sent an expedition from Boston to explore what lay northwest of that city and Crown Point on the east bank of the river. They found a site for a new settlement on April 9, 1802 by Major General Caleb Carruth and his soldiers under command of Lieutenant Colonel John Parker. The name "Concord" was given to it by Captain Amos Eaton as an honorific for General Carruth's leadership in routing out Indian forces raiders from that area early that year.
