Claremont, New Hampshire is a small town in northwestern NH. It's located on the border of Claremont and Goshen townships, about 20 miles northwest of Concord. The population was 2,847 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Claremont were Dutchman Jan Vermunt and his son Cornelis in 1614. The town was founded by Colonel John Manning in 1768 when he bought land from the Pembroke Native Americans. In 1812, the town was sold to Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for $1,000 cash. The railroad arrived in Claremont in 1855 and soon it became an important transportation center for the area. The population grew rapidly during the next few decades as people commute to jobs in Concord or Manchester. However, this growth came at a cost: many homes were built without proper planning or zoning laws which led to numerous building fires that destroyed most of the structures in town early on. In 1923, Claremont voters passed a resolution condemning World War II bombing raids against Japan which took place over their town while residents were asleep. This act helped spur development within town after years of planning and coordination between local officials and businesses owners. Today, many people still remember how important it was for Claremont to remain unharmed during those days – something that has made it one of the most resilient communities ever delivered unto humanity by humans! The town was named for Nicholas Clarendon, 2nd Viscount Clarendon, an English statesman who served as Prime Minister during the reign of George III. At its peak, Claremont had a population of about 1,500 people and was one of the most important towns in New Hampshire. Today, it has a population of about 120 people and is home to a small museum and historical marker. Claremont’s rich history began with its founding by the Pilgrims in 1634. The first settler in Claremont was Nicholas Clarendon, who came from England to help lead the Puritans to create a new society in America. In 1764, when John Adams became President of the United States, he traveled to New Hampshire to campaign for reelection. During his visit to Claremont, Adams signed an act placing it within bounds of Boston so that it could maintain its independence from Great Britain. In 1812–1813, during the War of 1812, Claremont joined with other towns in eastern New Hampshire in protesting Great Britain’s military campaigns against American forces abroad. After British troops burned down much of downtown Claremont on November 12th (the "Clarence Day" holiday), many inhabitants fled into hiding or took refuge at homes throughout their community; some managed to escape through underground tunnels dug beneath downtown streets during those days of panic and terror. Over time however, most residents returned home and rebuilt Downtown after being forced out by British soldiers and arsonists alike. Today's downtown area contains many businesses dating back to early 1800s including a woolen mill which still operates today! Along North Main Street you'll find several local restaurants including The Captain's Table which overlooks cannonballs shot off during World War I; also inside are several antiques shops along with two banks - both which date back over 100 years! Finally if you wander off North Main Street past Haystack Hill Cemetery towards Westville Avenue you'll find another local business - The post office - built around 1875 (!). This building still stands today (alongside several other buildings) vacated by mail service following closure of the main Post Office building on Elmira Road just east of town center back then!

It lies on the Connecticut River, west of Manchester and east of Lebanon. The first European to settle in Claremont was James White in 1768. He built a log cabin on what is now State Route 9 near present-day Claremont Lake. White operated a ferry across the river to connect his plantation with Manchester. The first store in Claremont opened in 1825 and was run by John Stephenson. In 1827, Nathaniel Hawthorne settled nearby on land he had purchased from Andrew Jackson for $1,000 (). The town name honor him and his wife Sophia Hawthorne. In 1848, Joshua Shepard established an academy in Claremont which became one of the leading schools in New England After years of discussion and many petitions by citizens, Claremont voted to become a city on November 3, 1857 under charter from Mayor Levi Coffin (1817-1892).
