A large new foundry was built near Main Street in 1925 which provided jobs for many local residents until it closed down around 1990 due to lack of funding from the municipality Today, most aspects of daily life are based on services offered by outside companies such as smartphones, banking and health care The rural character of much of New England has influenced how much village life persists into today while larger urban areas have become more industrialized What little housing remains available throughout much of Claremonter is severely deteriorated with few updates or repairs carried out in many years
Claremont was founded by Congregationalists in 1768. The town was named for Clarendon, a social and economic leader in the colony. In 1802, the town voted to become an incorporated village. On November 1, 1903, Claremont became a city after its incorporation.
