Claremont is a small town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,546 at the 2010 census. Claremont is known for its agricultural products, such as hay and oats, and for its geological features, including the Mount Monadnock Fault. The town was first settled in 1768 by men from Boston looking for land to farm. The first post office in Claremont was established on October 1, 1803. In 1815, the town became part of Granite State Territory after New Hampshire seceded from Massachusetts. The first settlers were men of means who purchased land east of the Merrimack River from the Native American tribe known as the Lenape. Claremont's early history is recounted in a booklet entitled "The Early Settlers of Claremont" which was published by the Claremont Historical Society in 1978. A section on Claremont's founding says that: "On November 3d (1768), some enterprising people set out from Boston withloading what they had brought with them to found a new village near where Montpelier now stands." Among those pioneers were John Goodyear and his brother-in-law Jonathan Edwards; Increase Mather and Benjamin Franklin; Moses Austin; Ebenezer Eaton; Nathaniel Parker; Timothy Pickering; James Caldwell (the son of Josiah Caldwell); Wm.[?] Savage (aided by his brother Samuel Savage) and others...In less than two months an accomplished community had arisen under pioneer leadership." George Washington visited Claremont twice during his presidency – once on December 12th while he was touring Canada and again on January 6th when he met with representatives from New England colonies at White House Hill. On several occasions President George Washington stopped at various places along his route before reaching Wilmington Delaware on February 14th.. This visit marks one occasion when members of both political parties came together to discuss common problems affecting their stateside counterparts..A plaque dedicated to Washington at this site commemorates this event.. It should be noted that despite President George Washington being present at various events taking place in New Hampshire during this time period there is no record or evidence that he ever laid eyes upon Claremont – until recently! This might be due to poor surface conditions within what are now called Old Town Square – located directly across Main Street from today’s business district – which have made it difficult or even impossible to verify any real estate or other local historical connections between president & townspeople
