The first coffee shop in Sparks, Nevada was called the General Store. It was founded by W.J. Thorburn in 1876 and served coffee until 1924. In 1907, Harry Hetrick opened the First National Coffee Shop and this became the first commercial store in Sparks. The Second National Coffee Shop was built in 1912 and it served as the main business center for Sparks for many years. In 1926, Harry Hetrick donated a building to the Sparks Business League which housed many of the local businesses before it went out of business in 1978. Today, there is still a small part of this building that remains used as a coffee shop/cafeteria called The Hetrick Building which is located at 5th Street and Federal Avenue in Sparks.
Sparks is a small town in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 5,638 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Sparks was Parson Weare in 1872. In 1907, John Bigham bought 160 acres (66 ha) of land east of town and homesteaded it. He named it "Bigham's Valley." By 1912, Bigham had sold most of his holdings to Ethel Murchison and her husband Harry Hennepin for $2 million dollars. They founded the city of Las Vegas and named their new community after sparks from their sparkplug light fixtures which they imported from Europe. In 1926, Al Capone made an investment with his brother-in-law George Santini in the familyowned United States Telephone Company (USTC). USTC became one of America's largest telecommunication companies with its acquisition of Western Electric Corporation in 1928. In 1942, General Motors Corporation acquired USTC for $10 million cash and stock shares as part of its attempt to build a monopoly over UTVC's industry shareholding within GMACs three divisions: Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick Motor Division; this takeover would later lead to GMAC being merged into Chrysler Corporation during World War II as part of that company's Allied Driveway program which also included acquisitions by Ford Motors Corporation (now known as Kia Motors), Nash Motor Company (now called Toyota), and General Electric Corporation (GEICO). During World War II Sparks served as a major airfield supplying both Allied forces flying supplies into/out of Operation Overlord and Nazi Germany flying raids against Great Britain/ England; these targets included RAF Bomber Command operations flown from nearby Hoover Dam Airfield during late 1941–early 1942 while other units such as fighter squadrons were based at nearby Fallon Field Air Force Base east of town providing support for Army Ground Forces ground operations over North Africa beginning early 1943 After hostilities ended the airport closed down but reopened briefly in 1946 when GEICO relocated their headquarters from Detroit to Sparks following their purchase by insurance giant American National Insurance Co.; however this brief reopening was short lived due to problems with asbestos insulation resulting in an extensive fire that destroyed all but four buildings on campus including GEICO Headquarters itself on May 6th 1947 . On October 15th 1950 Nevada State Game Commission established game lands encompassing all or parts of present day Sparks including what is now downtown; these lands were purchased by NGC from Rancho Mirage Gaming interests who leased them back to NGC under a 50-year lease agreement effective November 1st 1959 . On January 1st 1964 NGC sold all remaining assets including downtown square footage for $1 million cash to local developer Don Armstrong Sr., father-in-lawman – future Mayor – Don Armstrong Jr.. The Turner Building now stands vacant next door serving as office space for various businesses currently located inside or adjacent thereto

The name of the town came about because store owner George Witte donated land for a new post office and named it after himself and his wifestoreymom Nellie Sparkes Witte.
