Sparks is a small town in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 1,281 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Sierras and near Hoover Dam. The first mention of Sparks appears to be in 1868 when John C. Fremont camped there with his men while they were exploring the Willows country west of Reno. In 1869, Famed American explorer and scout George A. Smith named one of his properties "Sparks" after this small community on the east bank of Clear Creek River (now known as State Route 95). In 1870, LDS Church missionaries traveled through Nevada and came to Sparks to preach before traveling back outfitted for another trip in early 1871. Upon their return they left behind a number of items including an observatory which would become the nucleus around which sparks grew and flourished as an outdoor research center for astronomers from all over America. By 1880, Sparks had a post office and three churches: one Spanish-speaking Mormon church, one Methodist Episcopal church, and one Baptist church; though it only served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Carson City and Reno until 1895 when it became connected by rail to Reno proper via Washoe Junction station. In 1903, spark's citizens voted unanimously to become part of Clark County byila because they desired more access to education than what was available within their own individual county limits; this led to the construction of General William Tecumseh Sherman High School in 1906 followed by California Institute Of Technology (Caltech) in 1911 followed by Northern College (later University Of Nevada) in 1916; these two institutions would help spur growth throughout downtown Sparks while also creating many new jobs opportunities for locals during this time period. In 1868, John Condon arrived from England with his family to prospect for gold near Reno and he set up shop here at Fenton's Store and Trading Post as well before moving on to establish himself as a merchant at Carson City where he operated several stores until 1870 when he moved to nearby Wells Fargo Depot to open his own businesses there also becoming one of early settlers within sight of downtown Reno

A new courthouse and city hall were built in 1936 and 1938 respectively, and during World War II Sparks served as a military base for the Nevada Air National Guard. After the war ended, Sparks experienced significant growth as a result of new highway construction and development. In recent years, however, Sparks has suffered from economic decline and is currently experiencing a turn towards tourism.
