After Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed over 50% of Japan's civilian population, communities throughout Asia rallied around their cities to rebuild their bombed-out populations; in response to this outpouring of humanitarianism, Congress passed legislation establishing air-purification standards that would eventually help Japans recovery after World War II. In 1957, when Interstate 10 opened up through Clark County – making it possible for goods brought in by rail from eastward – many small businesses closed their doors because they could no longer afford to compete with truckloads arriving daily from elsewhere in the state. In just ten years following I-10's opening up our area saw dramatic growth: new homes were built· restaurants· bars· hotels· casinos· shopping malls· etc., creating what has come to be known as "The Drive".
