The Reno Navy Yard was founded in 1887 as a naval depot and shipyard. It served the US Navy for over ninety years, until it closed in 1982. The Reno Naval Depot reopened in 1984 as the Nevada Museum of History and Art. The museum is now located on the former navy yard site. In 1992, the US Congress designated the Reno Naval Depot and Museum as a National Historic Landmark. The history of navy gift giving begins with sailors aboard USS Constitution (1798-1802) who brought gifts back to their shipmates from China during the Opium Wars. After American independence, sailors aboard USS Constitution continued to bring presents back home to America, such as Commander James Kapp (1814-1896) who donated an extensive collection of Chinese art to various museums across North America including The Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., in 1868. In 1901, Captain Arthur Payson Crosby gave his famous “Prey” set of turtle eggs to Rear Admiral John Atherton for use at Hampton Roads Naval Station in Virginia Beach, VA. Admiral Atherton was then Commandant of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he developed new methods for manufacturing ships using sea urchins which became known as Crosby Shells or Cobrashells after him! These shells were used by Commodore Vanderbilt’s squadron during his 1892 cruise through Key West and Havana Bay – one of only TWO occasions that Battlefleet Perry ever sailed through key Cuban ports! Commodore Perry’s visit also earned him honorary membership with distinction of Rear Admiral Atherton’s Squadron! A number of subsequent commanders also contributed shell collections to various museums throughout North America: Commodore George Dewey donated 7 tons of Battle Slag off San Francisco; Vice Admiral David Farragut donated 1 tonneof slag mined from New Orleans Harbor; Rear Admiral Ernest Jellicoe gifted 2 pounds sterling worthof shells from HMS Surprise off St Helena Island; Rear Admiral John Halsey gifted 2 cannons from HMS Raleigh off Norfolk Island; Captain Harry Vail turned over 10 lbs weightof lead shot (from batteries on Long Island) to Brooklyn NRHP in 1917; Lt Col Wm Moulton Lewis turned over 24 firearms/ammunition items (including 6 pistols and six revolvers)to Providence RIHP in 1923; Captains Archibald Sinclair Beattie and Lester Buell each contributed 12 rifles/ammunition itemsTo Boston MAHNPI between 1933-1935.; As late as 1951 US Coast Guard Cutter SS President Kennedy was equipped with 5 minesweepersand1 torpedo boatflotilla comprising 49 officersandmen]These gifts convey not just personal feelings but also show appreciation for service rendered.– From her namesakeShip named after someone special.. The weapons were used to protect sailors and their families during World War I. The guns were then passed down to other departments within the navy, and eventually ended up in the hands of the Reno Police Department. In 1951, the police department donated these handguns to the Reno Museum of History and Art. Today, these pistols are used as part of museum exhibits and can be seen on display at various points throughout Reno.

It was founded in 1864 by Mormon pioneers as a cattle and horse country town on the eastern edge of what is now Carson City. In 1871, Reno became an independent city after it seceded from Carson City. The population was 97,429 at the 2010 census. The name "Reno" comes from Spanish words meaning "place where many animals roam." The first people to live in what is now Reno arrived around A.D. 1250 and were known as Paiute because they lived near present-day Las Vegas and Needles in southern California (now part of Southern Nevada). They hunted bighorn sheep and other small mammals that roamed free in this open area east of the mountains that ringed their homeland. One account says they named their new community Rio Bravo after one of these small mammals which had been shot by them while wandering through this region during their hunts for food. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Fort on January 4, 1859, many Mormons followed Captain Bennett to try to stake a claim for himself and his followers along with about 50 others employed by General George Armstrong Custer on his march across western Arizona into Mexico under United States command under General Kearny’s orders! Upon reaching Mexican soil they encountered fierce native resistance led by Lipan Apache Chief Cochise who led a pitched battle against Seventh Cavalry Sergeant coherently defended US soldiers until died gallantly following a sharp crossfire! Aftermath General Kearny ordered all but 5 men (2 Captains Storey & 2 Lieutenants Dodge) back overland to Nebraska Territory through Chihuahuan Desert before finally routing Mexican forces at Buenavista Springs July 14 followingMontezuma’s defeat at Palo Alto/Palo Alto Hills!!! This event helped spur development within what would become today’s Reno – including construction of early mills, stores and houses; establishment of schools; important railroad ties; arrival of Chinese immigrants who began working on coal mines; businesses such as dry goods store & laundry shop started up; etc… Today we enjoy beautiful views of downtown Reno from both sides of I-5 traffic congestions creating some interesting pedestrian walks not often seen anywhere else!
