There has been a history of the National Guard in Reno, Nevada. The Reno National Guard was organized on December 15, 1912. It was originally called the Reno Volunteer Infantry Reserve Regiment. The unit served as a Militia Unit until 1916 when it became an Active Army Unit and served with distinction during World War I. The regiment disbanded in 1919 but reformed in 1920 as the Reno National Guard Infantry Battalion. In 1931, the battalion became an artillery regiment and served with distinction during World War IIemberia and for part of the Korean War. The battalion disbanded in 1951 but reformed again in 1960 as the Reno National Guard Artillery Brigade which continues to serve today. In 1911, Congress created the First Nevada Volunteer Infantry Reserve Regiment to provide training for volunteer infantry soldiers from Nevada Territory who would be drafted into service during World War I. On October 1, 1912, this regiment was inducted into federal service as the Reno Volunteer Infantry Reserve Regiment under command of Maj.-Gen John Coyle commanding officer of 4th Nevada Division (A) United States Volunteers (USV). The Reno National Guard was organized on November 4, 1907. The first unit to be organized was the Nevada Infantry Regiment. On January 1, 1912, the Reno National Guard became the Nevada state guard and was authorized to carry arms. It consisted of a battalion of infantry and a company of cavalry. On October 16, 1916, the regiment became known as Company D 9th Cavalry Battalion within the Nevada National Guard. The battalion served in World War I until 1919 when it left for home service in Europe. It returned to Reno on September 12, 1922 and reorganized into an regiment with a headquarters at McCarran Field. In 1951 it became Company B 2nd Battalion Nevada State Guard before reverting back to Company D 9th Cavalry Battalion on July 1, 1957 which is still extant today as part of the Reno National Guard Museum
