The Reno Air Force Base is home to the Nevada National Guard's 108th Airlift Wing, which was activated on July 1, 1959. The wing flew cargo and passenger missions into and out of Sin City during the 1960s and 1970s. In early 1997, the 108th Airlift Wing was renamed the Reno Air Defense Sector (RADS) in commemoration of the Armed Forces' role in support of air defense operations throughout Nevada. The wing has provided airlift services for disaster relief efforts in Nevada since 2000. On November 5, 2001, a Boeing 727-200 carrying 271 passengers and crew members crashed into a mountainside near Reno after experiencing engine trouble while en route from Sacramento to Las Vegas. All but one person on board were killed; all nine survivors climbed down from the aircraft safely moments later. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Since its activation as a flyaway unit at Nellis AFB in 1961, when it became part of Tactical Air Command's Ninth Special Operations Group (9SOG), 614 Troop Carrier Squadron has flown more than 2 million hours operating both combat and noncombat aerial assets worldwide 34 times during deployments including two tours with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan (2001-2002). In Fiscal Year 2018 NAS Fallon deployed 416 Soldiers/Airmen aboard four C-17 Globemaster III Globemasters used by Joint Task Force – Strike Eagle (JTF‑SEAL) partnered with DynCorp International for their annual exercises "Enduring Freedom" & "Middle East".
