North Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. It was founded on October 1, 1911 by brothers Harry and Al Capone as a cattle station and oil refinery. The name North Las Vegas is thought to come from the Apache Indian word "Naháne" meaning “west side of the hill” or “north end of the valley”. The area now known as North Las Vegas was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. In 1912, J.P. Morgan established what would become his largest holdings in Nevada when he acquired title to 7,500 acres (2,000 hectares) of land east of downtown Reno for $10 million dollars. By 1915, organized crime had taken over North Las Vegas and it became one of their most important centerpieces. In 1923, General Motors merged with French interests including Magna Carta Trust which had purchased many properties in eastern Nevada including NorthLasVegas from Spanish colonists. GM dedicated much effort into developing this new town and through its development it helped solidify American control of the region during World War II. On November 5th 1957 President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed November 5th as National Day to honor all those who have made contributions to America through service or Patriotism during that fateful time period- most notably General Electric Co-founder James Forrestal who served as Secretary of Defense under Eisenhower during some very high-stakes moments during the Korean War
