The United States Coast Guard has been providing service to the Nevada community since 1879. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect and defend our nation's coasts and waters, while helping keep Nevadans safe. Today, the Coast Guard operates a wide range of services including maritime safety and security; search and rescue; law enforcement; disaster response; and environmental protection. The Coast Guard gift history in North Las Vegas began in 1879 when Captain George Armstrong took command of the North Las Vegas Harbor Patrol. His unit patrolled the harbor for illegal activities, such as smuggling goods into Nevada, fishing without a license, and drunk driving. Captain Armstrong also collected money from ticket sales at his stoplights. In 1933, Captain John Waddell was appointed Commandant of the Coast Guard Academy and oversawthe expansion of the academy curriculum to include marine safety and security skills. In 1967,Captain Harry Jenssen became Commandant of the Marine Security Forces Unit which provided training on how to deal with narcotics traffickers, pirates, smugglers/pirate ships, stormtroopers/security guards etc.. On December 5th 1969 Captains Don Ladd (Commandant) & Al Thomas (Commissioner) transferred control of North Las Vegas Harbor Patrol from Captain Armstrong to Captains Don Ladd & Al Thomas effective date...'North las vegas harbour patrol-still in existence today byCaptainsDonLadd&AlThomas'. Today there are 3 detachments assigned to North lasvegas area-USCG Detachment 1- consisting of Active Duty Sailors located at Naval Surface Warfare Center Riverhead across from UNLV campus naval air station Henderson AFB detachment 2 - consisting Active duty Marines stationed at Nellis AFB detachment 3 - consistdng Reserve Officers/Enlisted members who are usually called up for short periods during peacetime

The Coast Guard has been a part of American society since the 1700s. The first coast guard stations were established in 1776 and the Coast Guard was founded as an organization on July 6, 1914. The Coast Guard is responsible for maritime security, public safety, and preventing collisions between ships and aircraft. In 1916, Congress passed the Magnuson Act which created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to provide research and development for space exploration. This gave rise to the Coast Guard's involvement in space exploration. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Reagan Doctrine which stated that America would always be at war with communism. This led to increased activity by the Coast Guard in international waters. Since 2001, there has been a growing trend of refugees being brought onto U.S shores by boat. In response to this increase in arrivals, President George W Bush ordered Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to close all ports of entry along our southern border with Mexico until further notice. This resulted in more than 2 million people being deported from the United States during his term alone. As of 2016, North Las Vegas ranked tenth out of 21 cities selected for inclusion in the "Great American City" study by Studylink Inc.; this resulted from Measure R – a $1 million public-private partnership led by Mayor Carolyn Goodman – which sought to improve retail commerce within downtown streetscape corridors between Spring Street/Southeast Seventh Avenue and Main Street/Southwest Seventh Avenue through targeted investments such as more parking spaces and better pedestrian flow along these streetscapes. As part of this initiative, businesses were given access to new or renovated space within downtown blocks between Spring Street/Southeast Seventh Avenue and Main Street/Southwest Seventh Avenue (the "Downtown Core"). These changes are intended to spur increased foot traffic through these streetscapes while improving ambiance and aesthetics overall within Downtown Core neighborhoods adjacent to North Las Vegas Boulevard South & I-5 southward from Henderson Freeway
