Today, Las Vegas is an important cultural and economic center for Southern Nevada. The Dutch named the bean Java-berries after their location, Java in Indonesia. In 1795, a Swiss scientist, Leonhard Ebeling, developed a process to make coffee beans from roasted grains using a small amount of water and sulfur dioxide gas. This process allowed for better flavor and more expensive coffee than older methods used with wood or charcoal fires. In 1847, two Frenchmen, Henri Lefèvre and Auguste Brossard founded La Caza de Palo Negro (The Black Forest Coffee Estate), which became one of the most important roast-coffee production centers of its time. In 1912, World War I began and although coffee was not included within the rationed items given to troops, it did become an important product because it helped soldiers stay awake during long marches through combat zones. After World War II ended, many countries started producing their own coffees based on different strains of teas that they had grown or purchased from independent companies around the world. One such company was Starbucks Corporation which opened its first store in Seattle in 1977
