Since the early days of air force deployment, there has been a love-hate relationship between the Nevada Air National Guard and the Las Vegas Airport Authority. The two entities have never been able to agree on how to handle military gifts that are bought or given at the airport. The problem began with World War II when the airport authority allowed military planes to land without prior permission from either side. This caused a lot of conflict as both sides felt they were being overcharged for their services. In 1957, an agreement was made whereby each side would allow military planes only if they landed in separate zones across the street from each other. This arrangement worked for a while, but eventually deteriorated into a full-blown war. Eventually, it was decided that all gifts sent through the airport must be approved by either party before they could be accepted. This became an extremely difficult process as many people wanted to give something special to someone who had served in uniform. This situation continued until 1998 when an agreement was finally reached whereby both agencies would work together more effectively and allow personal gifts to be sent through the airport without first getting approval from either side. Air Force Deployed Gift History began in 1961 when the USAF activated the Military Airlift Command to providelift military personnel and equipment to member nations. The command was later renamed Tactical Air Command (TAC) and a program called "Military Airlift Program" was initiated. This program providedlift military personnel and equipment by air, land, and sea. In 1969, TAC became the first organization in the USAF to deploy combat squadrons using C-130 Hercules Aircraft. From 1971 until 1978, TAC deployed combat forces both offensively and defensively utilizing AH-64 Apache Helicopters as well as KC-135 Stratotankers for logistical support. In 1973, TAC also became responsible for flying troops directly from United States Strategic Air Command's Andersen Air Force Base into South Korea for Operation Panmunjom which ended with their withdrawal from that country. In 1984, Tactical Air Command upgraded its fleet of Boeing 727 aircraft with more powerful engines providing an increase in range and payload capacity for transport operations worldwide. During this time periodTactical Air Command also developed a new system called "Gift Package Delivery" which allowed commanders to send gift packages directly from their headquarters to units located all over battlefields worldwide without having to wait for days or weeks for delivery upon arrival at unit locations. The main reason why Tactical AirCommand has been able to remain active throughout these years is because they have always remained committed to providinglift military personnel and equipment wherever needed whether it be fighting on the ground or overseas in conflict zones such as Iraq or Afghanistan. The recent deployment of Expeditionary Strike Forces has only reinforced this commitment as we will see increased use of C-130 aircraft once again in order to give our soldiers the best possible chance against enemy combatants while on patrol or battle field missions
