The Coast Guard was founded on April 16, 1918, in Henderson, Nevada. The first Coast Guard station was opened in that town and it is still in operation today. The Coast Guard has jurisdiction over a area of 1,500 square miles and employs more than 5,000 people. It patrols the U.S. coastline from Maine to California and has a assets range including 11 ships and submarines. The history of Coast Guard gifts began with the donation of two boats by Captain John Mears to the Henderson Harbor Board on May 13, 1912. Captain Rufus Haines donated four more boats in 1916-17 and 1919-20; these were used for coastal patrol missions along the coast of southern California. In 1923-24 Captains Jens Heiman and Clarence Bogan donated four lifeboats; these were also put into service for coastal patrols off the coast of California. In 1948-49 Commodore Harry Dyson offered twenty officers’ uniforms as well as three motorized launch planes to be used by the Henderson Harbor Board for use at night during storms on the coast; this was followed by a donation of six sailing vessels in 1951-52 from Commodore Sidney Kaneham (the first captain from Long Beach harbor). These vessels were used for search and rescue services during severe weather events such as hurricanes or tsunamis. In 1954Captain James Fenton generously gifted ninety five rifles to be used by the Coast Guardsmen stationed at Point Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego County; this was followed by donations of two patrol boats (1955), one launch plane (1957), three motorized launches (1972), four sailing vessels (1976), one helicopter (1986) and one base flagstaff (1993). A total of 1,895 items have been donated through different programs over time!
