When news arrived of gold discoveries in California during the summer of 1848, many Norwegians who had been working westward decided to move to Sierra Madre because it seemed easier to get rich quick than work their way across the country. The party that included Hagen, Nordahl and Olsen traveled overland from Carson City to Las Vegas via Salt Lake City before arriving at what is now Carson City on July 25th of that year.
