In 1961, the Marine Corps activated Camp Pendleton and, since then, Marines have Deployed to Fernley on various occasions. The present day Marine detachment is made up of around 350 Marines who are based at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey Bay.
Fernley is a town in Butte County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,942 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Tahoe, NV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fernley was founded in 1875 by brothers Cyrus and George Fernley. They named it after their childhood home of Fernlea on theranch near Georgetown, Kentucky. The Fernleys were Methodists and their home became a religious retreat for many years until they sold it in 1914 to establish what is now known as the Fernley Bible Institute Museum. A post office was established at Fernley in 1880, and remained in operation until 1959. The town was incorporated on April 6, 1912. In 1922, the first school opened; it served grades one through twelve and was called "Fernley High School" until 1954 when it became "Fernley Junior-Senior High School". The first store opened in 1924; it later became known as the "Big Store". A small hospital (now known as Kern Regional Medical Center) opened its doors here in 1925. In 1957, Fenton Shores Corporation built a large manufacturing plant east of town dumpster fires broke out regularly during night hours which destroyed many homes around town including that of Mrs. Jules Farrell who lived on Main Street across from Big Store before her house caught fire due to an accidental wire connection failure while she slept; both temperatures outside exceeded 100 degrees that day records still stand today . . . finally getting control over these conditions led to stoping these Fires activities causing overall economic stability throughout much of 1961-1963

Fernley is a small town located in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by John Fernley and his brother-in-law William McNamara as a ranching center for cattle and sheep operations. In 1902, Fernley became a mining town after discovery of silver ore on his property. In 1905, the first post office was established in the community; it operated until 1909. In 1916, Fernley became an incorporated municipality when its citizens approved a measure to allow municipal government without taxation by referendum. From 1916 to 1933, Fernley had two mayors: A. Hutton French and J C McCarthy. The early years of World War II were tough for the small town; however, during the war production increased because of wartime demand for military supplies such as gasoline and bullets from nearby Reno and Sparks. Afterward, business began to dwindle as residents turned their attention back to farming or other pursuits outside of town limits
Fernley was founded in 1865 by J.P. Fernley, who named it after himself. The town developed around a railroad depot and post office, which remain extant today. Fernley has had a variety of businesses operate within its boundaries over the years, including a bank, mechanic shop, grocery store, doctor's office and more.
