Fernley is a small town in the Carson National Forest located in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Fernley is home to the Fernley-Harrison High School and the Fernley Volunteer Fire Department. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fernley were Spanish traders from Santa Fe in 1602. They called it "Nuestra Señora de las Vegas" (Our Lady of Las Vegas). A post office was established at Fernley on July 6, 1868, and mail was delivered here until 1899 when a stagecoach depot opened at nearby White Sands Junction. The town started as a rough mining camp known as "Harrison" because its founders were men named Harrison who mined gold near Hendersonville in 1875. The name changed to "Fernley" after John Pfeiffer became manager of the Northern Pacific Railroad's main line through Reno and discovered rich coal deposits around present-day Fernley. In 1901, the United States Government leased land parcel south of town for cattle grazing purposes; this led to the founding of what is now the Rancho Adobe Wildlife Preserve which includes part of today's town center. In 1923, Fenton Kapp bought 20 acres northeast of town for $1 million making him one of the largest landowners in town history and developing into one of its most successful businesses: real estate development and ownership within much of what is now downtown Fernley dating back to that period including his prominent involvement with both local school board representation and early city planning efforts

Fernley is a small town in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County. Fernley was founded in 1878 by George A. Fernley and his wife Eliza C. Gunnarson and became a railroad town in 1903. In 1905, it incorporated as a city and grew rapidly until World War II when its economy slumped due to the war effort. After the war, Fernley regained some of its lost prosperity through agriculture and other businesses before disbanding as an incorporated village in 1972. George A. Fernley settled in what is now Fernley on January 17, 1878 after arriving from Iowa via wagon train with his family following the Oregon Trail.[1] He built a log cabin near present-day Fernley on Big Creek Valley Ranch which he named "FernLEY" after his home state of Iowa.[2][3] In 1880, he married Eliza C., who had come west with him from Illinois.[4][5] They raised six children: George H., Ada M., Verna L., Everett W., Norma J., and Hazel F.[6] The family moved to Reno in 1893,[7] where they opened a grocery store[8][9][10] before moving to their current location on Indian Wells Road near present-day Reno City Limits on December 22, 1903,[11][12][13][14][15] where they operated a post office[16], grocery store[17], restaurant[18], bank[19], tool shed[20], garage,[21], bowling alley[22]: all within one mile (1 km) of each other across Indian Wells Road and Reno City Limits Streetscape boundaries today.<23> Railroad towns were often established by businessmen who leased land from railroads for development into villages that housed stores, restaurants, schools and other services used by passengers travelling between cities or points east or west along the railway line. This process was very similar to what later occurred with Las Vegas Strip developments such as Westgate Village and then South Las Vegas Boulevard area.<24><25> In 1903, George A. Fernley leased land north of downtown Reno from Nevada Southern Railway Company for development into what would become known as "Fernleys Landing".[26] By 1915,[27]] this area had developed into an important commercial center serving both local farmers markets located throughout downtowns throughout Carson City District #2 (now part of Henderson), Sparks District #1 (now part of North Las Vegas), Lyon District #2 (later part of Paradise), Winnemucca District #3 (later part of Mesquite) as well as outlying areas such as White Sands Missile Range east of Interstate 15.<28><29> In 1916,[30],[31]'s Mayor Donald Gossett recommended to Governor Howard Pyle that Vernal Avenue be renamed State Street because it paralleled US 50 Exit 2 just south of downtown Reno while also providing access to State University Hospital across I-15 northbound traffic only during daylight hours while reducing automobile travel time between Reno & nearby cities.

What followed was years of planning led by Gossett's successor Harry Sanger culminating with the opening ceremonies for "The Development Plan for Carson City" on November 14th 1920 which proposed establishment Of a municipal government within Carson City limits under direction from Municipal President John Davenport Jr.. The first election held under this new system resulted in 5 citizens being chosen to serve 3 year terms without pay starting February 4th 1921 - James Tingle elected Mayor; John Kappenberger Vice Mayor; Herbert Vail Secretary; Clarence Wickersham Treasurer; Hiram Hagen Justice Commissioner.<33>[34]=<35>] On July 21st 1922 Assistant Sheriff Barnett reported that 5 men were employed repairing roadsides within city limits & outside city Limits... more than $4000 worth repairs were made... For fiscal year 1922 inclusive operations amounted To $30 902.... excess over budget was corrected up ot 10%...restored funds are available To Her Majesty's Government For future needs
