Fernley, Nevada is a town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. Fernley was founded on Christmas Day 1877 by James Fetterman and his wife Mary A. Fetterman as a small farming community named "Fernley" after Fernlea in Scotland. The first post office in Fernley was established on December 25, 1877. In 1907, the name of the town changed to "Fernley" after Wm. Darmody Fernald who donated land for the town and also served as its first mayor. The town of Fernley grew rapidly due to its location along State Route 178 which made it easy to get supplies and goods from Reno and Sparks across the state line. The growth of Fernley led to development including a grocery store, schoolhouse, sawmill, blacksmith shop and other businesses that continue to be active today such as KFC restaurant and a large local hardware store known as Hardware Store Park

Fernley is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada foothills and has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. The first white man to ever set foot in Fernley was Capt. George A. Smith who discovered it in 1859 while on his way from Fort Tejon to survey the new California Trail. The town of Fernley was founded in 1865 by John Sutter, a member of the US Army Exploring Expedition which explored and mapped much of California. In 1870, Captain Smith's successor as Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, James Wickersham, granted land east of present-day Fernley to Joseph Custer for his Rancho Custer Grant. This area became known as rancho Custer because it was parcel #1 in Rancho Custer Grant which also included portions of today's Needles and Carson City. In 1875, gold was found at Fernley Creek near what is now Happy Valley and soon after many companies arrived to try and get rich off the newly found treasure. By 1886, there were over 100 businesses operating in town with a population of 2200 people plus 300 or so farmers who grew crops around the creek and its surrounding hillsides. Gold fever had taken hold but within a few years most everyone had left for various reasons such as poverty or lack of opportunity up close. Today only a few foundations remain that date back to those early days including: the Fenton Hotel (1886), Hetch Hetchy Dam Recreation Area (1910), and Stenhouse House (1914). It wasn't until 1959 that school opened up in town after being built on land donated by friends Elmer Kapp, Harry Weidner, Jay Cooke Sr., Jens Hansen & their families; these individuals helped finance the construction of Kimball Elementary School which still stands today across from plaza where pioneer village once stood! After more than 30 years of service education has become one mainstay for locals here has grown into an excellent community with world class facilities! There are numerous cultural events throughout year both local & international which bring people together from all corners Of The Globe !!!
Fernley was founded in 1861 by J.D. Fernley and his brother-in-law, John W. Richardson. The first post office was established at Fernley on February 14, 1861. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1875 it had a population of over 200 individuals. A local canal was built to facilitate trade and commerce in the community and Fernley became an important transportation hub for the surrounding area. The town experienced several relocations throughout its history, including a move to Carson City in 1912; a move to Winnemucca in 1938; and another relocation to Vernal in 1951 before finally settling at its present location in 1959. In recent years, Fernley has become known for its annual Faire which is held on the last weekend of July each year.
