Elko is a small city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 14,351 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. The name "Elko" is from an 1853 treaty between Spain and Russia that divided the San Carlos Mountains between them. The first people to live in what is now Elko were Paiute Indian traders who had come there during the Gold Rush period in 1859-60. In 1865, General Edmund Kirby Smith set up a military post here named Fort Robinson on the east bank of the San Carlos River. In 1868, John Sutter established his plant at Deadwood which soon became one of the most important fur-trading centers in California and Western North America. There was also considerable Mormon settlement here before Brigham Young's Mormons removed to Utah in 1847. In 1893, gold was discovered at Elko but it wasn’t until 1907 when a millrace called “the Narrows” breakthrough opened up with water available for irrigation by American farmers as well as prospectors near present-day Sparks and Reno about 12 miles upstream from town center on Clear Creek (now called Humboldt Creek). This made Elko an important agricultural center with large acreage irrigated by canals running through town into Reno and Sparks National Forest just south of it. By 1916, when mining ceased due to overproduction caused by easy access to abundant supplies of gold along streamsides all around elk country., many elderly women still worked non-stop sorting laundry out of handloads brought downriver each day by steamboats plying Route 66 (now I‑5) then traveling north past Vegas landing at Elk Lake) back upstream again wagons were used instead hauling goods downriver empty lots were platted off for later commercial development including office buildings now home to several bars/restaurants/shops including some dating back to 1915 when eastern Nevada State University moved from nearby Tonopah after serving as its main campus since 1794; four blocks south from downtown this beautiful old brick building served as Washoe County Courthouse until consolidation with Reno proper occurred in 1924; By 1940 only 1 percent of Elko’s population lived within city limits while nearly all residents lived outside unincorporated areas within either Clark or Washoe Counties boundaries providing services such as ambulance service; fire protection; garbage collection; schools; hospitals; libraries etc.; making Elko a vital community node especially during times of drought or special need like World War II when much needed labor came throughtown helping build airstrips etc.; finally reaching its peak population size of 16,000 residents prior to 2000 Censuswhendemographic changes resultingfrom Interstate 40 construction which diverted major travel routes away from town changed much aspectsof daily life thereby reducing overall economic activity which beganuniaxing2000 CE
