Here are some examples: In 1930, the Elko Police Department was founded. At that time, it was one of only a few departments in Nevada without its own jail. The department started out as an eight-man force and soon grew to a twenty-man force. In 1935, the Elko Fire Department became part of the Elko Police Department and eventually merged into it in 1951. In 1967, the Elko Sheriff's Office joined the police department as well. At that time, it was one of only two sheriff's offices in Nevada not to have its own station house or office inside of town limits. In 1984, officer Roy Gentry was killed in action while serving with the police department on patrol when he were ambushed by members of a rival gang member organization known as "the family." Elko, Nevada is an unincorporated community in Washoe County, Nevada. The population was 2,848 at the 2000 census. It is located about northeast of Reno on State Route 191. The townsite of Elko was first surveyed in 1864 by George A. Smith and named after the then-new town of Elkerville, Illinois. The name has been changed several times over the years to reflect the location: "Elk City" in 1915, "Eldorado" in 1919, and finally "Leno" in 1959. At its peak population of 20,000 people in 1940 it was one of the most populous townships in Nevada. However, as Elko became more rural and its residents moved to other parts of Nevada and into new counties, its population gradually decreased until it had a total count of 1,182 at the 2000 census. The history of Elko begins with two ranchers named Waddelland and Wellman who decided to set up ranching operations hereabouts during World War I. They were successful enough that they decided to expand their holdings a few miles eastward into what is now Washoe County on November 15th 1916 when they filed a deed with Washoe CountyRecorder John Sutter under section 10b (now section 8) of the Ranch Lands Act which authorized such deeds for 160 acres (0.6 square miles). Thereafter various families began settling down around Elk Valley where irrigation water from nearby mountains provided their primary source for food or fiber purposes; fruit trees were also grown to generate income for distribution throughout their area; cattle were raised for milk and meat products; mining operations took place primarily at Butte Creek but also included some significant occurrences including shafts drilled into hostile hills near present day Reno; later still driftwood processing became an important industry requiring numerous men and equipment along Withy Creek particularly due to recent gold discoveries offshore.; although transportation came only through horses drawn wagons or covered wagons running on runners alluvial soils over deep sand bars & rapids,—the prevalent mode until recently (& now quite rare), was travel by horseback over open country via old wagon trails.— Today there are several accessible paved roads within easy driving distance providing excellent access both northward towards Las Vegas & southward towards Carson City.—Today nearly every family has either one or two children working outside—-although there are still many traditional values held dear within this community—-most notably close personal relationships within families thru traditional bartering practices.,
