The history of Elko begins with pioneers who set out from Fort Bridger in 1859 for what would be their new home in present-day Butte County. One group included Capt. John Sieving and his family who arrived on July 10th of that year. They built a small cabin near what is now downtown Elko on Red Cloud Creek where they lived for about two years before moving on into new land that lay just east of present-day downtown Elko. Captain Sieving's party was joined by some other early settlers including James Haughey, Willard Richards and Samuel Taylor within weeks of their arrival; these men also organized a local militia company which served during Indian Wars vigils at Fort Bridger until 1861 when hostilities ended without any real conflict taking place between American Indians and white soldiers.
