Elko (population: 7,500) is a small town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. It is the most populous city in the county and is considered to be its cultural and economic center. The population of Elko was 816 at the 2010 census. The first people to arrive in what is now Elko were Paiute Indians who hunted deer and other game in the area. A group of Mormons from Utah arrived in 1847 while on their way to California. They named their new settlement after one of their members, John Sutter, who had founded Sacramento County, California. The first post office at Elko was established in 1854. At that time it was located near present-day Josephine Lake and east of today's downtown area. In 1865 a schoolhouse and three stores were built by native Americans; one for each tribe that lived there at the time. In 1868 an hotel called "The Homestead" was erected by settlers on land donated by James Waddell; it became known as the Waddell Hotel until 1907 when it burned down. In 1870 a railroad station was built on what is now U Street NW;later renamed Union Station after unions won passage of the National Labor Union Act of 1935 In 1903–1904 work began on building what would become Cowboys Hall which still stands today as part of Valley Fairgrounds Park (formerly Veterans Memorial Coliseum),home to concerts and other events throughout the year since 1951 . The hall cost $15 million to build including subsidies from both state government ($6 million)and private investors ($10 million). It opened October 6th 1904 with performances by Will Rogers and his countrymen vaudeville act Tom Mix (). One notable event during its construction took place when 11 engineers working for Southern Pacific Railroad refused to move forward with plans for a viaduct over Elk Creek because they believed that this would create too much traffic congestion within town limits – resulting in an aborted move that would have made Elko one of America’s largest cities! On July 15th 1957 locals celebrating World’s Columbian Exposition coined themselves “Elks” due to popular demand following news reports about park rangers raiding gay bars across town! Some residents continued this nickname into later years despite increasingly disapproving attitudes towards homosexuality among many Nevadan elites

Elko is a town in Elko County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Tahoe metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1879 by Captain Isaac Babcock and his family as a trading post on the Hells Canyon Railroad. In 1886, it became a town and was named after General James S. Elkin who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1888, and the first store opened in 1889. In 1915, the Post Office Department replaced its predecessor as a stagecoach stop with an addition to the buildings that still stand today (now known as "Babcock's Store"). In 1933, during World War II, Elko became one of six communities within Reno County which were designated for military production because they were all located near major airfields or shipping points for war materiel being produced elsewhere in Nevada and California. The community also received financial assistance from local businesses through contracts with private companies such as Lockheed Corporation to produce cars for U.SAAF use; these aircraft would be used for photographic reconnaissance over Japan during the war years. As part of this program, Lockheed also built an assembly line at Babcock's Store where parts were made into airplanes before shipment to other Air Force bases around the country
