Today nearly every family has some connection to agriculture or ranching either through ownership or tenancy; many are still working off-farm or driving trucks across country delivering goods across long deserts such as this one! The first post office in Elko was established on July 1, 1861. The name of the town came from an Indian word meaning "the place where the black snake lives." In 1868, a railroad line was built through the area and Elko became a boomtown. Development continued until World War II when the economy collapsed following the war's impact on American industry. Today, Elko is a tiny community of about 2,000 residents that relies heavily on agriculture for its economic development. A mix of ranchers and farmers live hereabouts as well as some service businesses such as car sales and home repairs. There are also several dozen small businesses located throughout town although most work within their own specific industries or markets. There are no banks or other commercial institutions in town; instead, residents rely extensively upon family-owned stores and restaurants for many everyday needs such as groceries, health services, and transportation options. The history of Elko is intertwined with that of Paiute Indians who have inhabited this region for centuries before white settlement began (see History of Paiute Nation). The first European to visit what is now Elko County was Francisco Vasquez de Coronado during his trip up into California in 1540 (see map below). After exploring much of what is now Nevada he reported back to Spain that he had seen "a great city" lying beyond present day Reno called Yucca Valley which he thought must be Pahoehoe Falls due to its similarity to City Gorge near Yucca Flatts on the Carson River near Los Angeles today ( Map courtesy Google Earth ). Mexican traders traveling down into California between 1769-1770 discovered large deposits of silver at Sutter’s Fort including this valley – thus starting Spanish exploration westward along what would become modern Nevada Territory including parts of Utah and Arizona which later led to US discovery and settlement by early Americans including Captain James Cook aboard HMS Endeavour during his famous voyages around 1778-1779

In the 1960s, Elko experienced a downturn caused by racial tensions that emerged following Operation Rancho Santa Fe. However, since then it has bounced back several times with steady economic growth unseen in most local communities throughout Nevada. In recent years it has seen increased development due to both new businesses and residential projects; however, violence remains a problem in some areas particularly along Interstate 80 which separates Elko from Reno
