By 1870, white settlers had established themselves in what is now Carson City and began to explore land east of the mountains. In 1877, Nevada Territory was organized and soon after purchase by California under pressure from Ulysses S. Grant to provide land for his expanding army at the expense of Native American tribes. The area surrounding present-day Carson City was surveyed and laid out as part of Rancho Santa Anita de las Flores (now Pershing National Monument). The town's first store opened on December 6th, 1879.
