The Carson City Coast Guard was established in 1913. The Coast Guard was created to protect the waters around Carson City and its vicinity, which at that time included a vast area of desert and sagebrush. In addition, the Coast Guard also had a responsibility for providing safety for travelers along the Nevada-Arizona border. In 1942, the Coast Guard added an air support division, which became known as the “Carson City Air Defense Command” or simply “CAP”. CAP provided air defense services from then-township of Carson City until it was disbanded in 1974. The history of Coast Guard gift giving begins with donations by sailors and Marines who served on patrol off the coast of California during World War II. These gifts were often given to local families as thanks for their help inocausting Nazi Germany and helping America become victorious in that conflict. After the war ended, many sailors returned home and began to donate their skills and equipment to local community organizations such as the Carson City Chamber of Commerce or fire FIGHTERS PACIFIC INC., which later became known as CAP. Many members of CAP donated their time and talents to fundraising events such as caroling Christmas parades or carnivals throughout Nevada. Gifts were also sent directly to local hospitals or schools where children were being treated for various illnesses caused by warfare or weather conditions abroad. As World War III approached, Gifts from Sailors serving aboard vessels afloat in our region began arriving at CAP headquarters in downtown Reno every Thursday morning during lulls in traffic on I-80 (now US 95). The gifts would be brought ashore by members of Navy Petty Officer First Class David McGeechan who handled logistics for Captains Johnnie Caldwell (left) and Don Rothschild (right). This continued until about 1979 when Captain Caldwell passed away due to a heart attack at age seventy-four years old! This event is still celebrated each Thursday morning at 3 p.m., when Petty Officer First Class McGeechan leads a procession down I-80 past the bridge over Virgin River into downtown Reno where he presentsLt.-Colonel James Aiken (left) with a gift from one of his many Naval Veterans friends!!!
