In 1865, Boulder City became an important transportation center due to its location at the head of the Washoe River. The city experienced rapid growth during World War I thanks to its military significance as a staging ground for movement across Nevada and into California. During World War II, Boulder City played an important role inthe development ofthe atomic bomb program which resulted in the death of over 50 people including many high-ranking officials such as Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Mayor Ralph Jaffe. After the war, BoulderCity suffered from economic decline beginning in the late 1960s exacerbated by increasing competition from other towns in Northern Nevada such as Reno and Sparks. However, over time BoulderCity has regained some of its former prominence thanks to its history, architecture, and infrastructure
