Their holdings included a large ranch near Reno that they used as a base while running their businesses interests across Nevada Territory. During World War I, Boulder City played an important role in supporting American troops stationed on Nevada Territory shoreslines. Insufficient shipping capacity made it difficult for American forces to bring food and other supplies upriver to soldiers ashore, so BoulderCity filled this need through its participation in local manufacturing industries such as leather goods and munitions production
Boulder City was the first permanent settlement in Nevada and the only one founded on the present-day border of Arizona and California. The town was named for George Custer, who died in a battle with Apache Indians near Tucson, Arizona, on July 24, 1876. In 1879, Boulder City became an established city under the jurisdiction of Santa Fe County.
