The United States Army presence in Boulder City commenced on December 8, 1912 with the arrival of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment at the old military post of Fort Lyon. The battalion was quartered here for a short period before being moved to Reno. On January 17, 1913, the 4th Cavalry Regiment arrived in town and began garrisoning at Fort Lyon. As World War I neared its conclusion, it became evident that an army depot would be necessary to store equipment and supplies needed by both armies. Accordingly, on July 14, 1916 Congress appropriated $225,000 to create and fund the Army Depot at Boulder City. The first shovels were turned over to Government employees on October 1 of that year. The Army Depot functioned as a storage facility until 1942 when it was transferred to the War Department's Military Intelligence Service (MIS). Inactivated on September 30 of that year and placed into operations as Vietnam Headquarters Center (VHC) under Defense Intelligence Agency control. The MIS also operated nearbyestablishments at McCarran International Airport and Hoover Dam until 1975 when they were retired from Operations in order to make way for civilian use. In 1993-1994 there was renovation project which resulted in increased visitor traffic through now opened gates located off US 191 east of downtown Boulder City Today the Army Depot is open daily from 9am-4pm with shuttle service available between depot and city center for those unable or unwilling to walk or take public transportation
