Boulder City, Nevada is a small town in the Clark County region of Nevada. The population was 3,674 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Las Vegas Valley and is bordered by Mesquite to the north, Paradise to the east, North Las Vegas to the south and Boulder City to the west. According to The Gazetteer of Nevada (1961), "The original inhabitants of this locality were Paiutes who came overland from Arizona in 1864." The first post office was established in 1868. The name "Boulder City" was given by J.D. Payne with assistance from Harry Waddell and James Whitehead while they were working on a survey for mining claims near present-day Boulder City. In 1929, miners discovered silver ore in what is now known as Old Town Boulder City and quickly began developing it into a mining community which soon reached its peak during World War II when production soared due to efforts by local mine operators such as Harry Hildebrandt and Everett Kroll. However, following America's entry into World War II, production declined as Japan began Productionriegsurge operations in Southeast Asia; this led to a decline in silver prices which hurt Boulder City's economy throughout the war years. In 1945 however, silver prices recovered slightly so local industry recommenced production; however there has been little recent progress on recovering profitability because of changing technology and competition from other mines around town. Boulder City, Nevada was founded on November 2, 1864 by prospectors John C. Fremont and James W. White. The town was named for the nearby mountain called Boulder Peak. However, it remained little more than a small Reno-based trading post until 1898 when it became part of Las Vegas County through an Act of Congress passed by President William McKinley. In 1912, Boulder City become one of three cities within newly formedClark County when it was split from unincorporated Carson Valley District. It has since undergone numerous changes due to annexation by other municipalities and growth within its own boundaries – most notably becoming an urban area with a growing Population Services Center (PSC) industry; today’s downtown is home to over 100 businesses and service providers including many Fortune 500 companies including Northrop Grumman Corporation and MGM Mirage Resort & Casino; four elementary schools; two high schools; two universities: UNLV (formerly University Of Nevada) and Southeastern Community College; six parks totaling over 27 acres; nine clinics serving over 1 million patients annually; as well as several thousand housing units built since 2000 primarily through eminent domain proceedings granted by the Clark County Board of Supervisors
