The South Sioux City, Nebraska Army National Guard was activated on December 12, 1907. The unit was organized as the First Battalion, Eighth Regiment (Nebraska). The battalion was redesignated the Third Battalion, Eighth Regiment on July 1, 1918 and the Fourth Battalion, Eighth Regiment on October 15, 1918. On November 9th of that year the battalion was mobilized and activated as the Seventh Brigade Combat Team in support of World War I. The brigade combat team served with distinction in France from 1917 to 1919. In 1921 the brigade combat team became a regiment and was redesignated as Ninth Infantry Brigade Combat Team which remained active until 1972 when it disbanded. In 1970 the Iowa National Guard's Fifteenth Infantry Division offered to merge with Ninth Infantry Brigade Combat Team in order to create an all-Iowa army National Guard force. This offer was accepted and on November 5th of that year both battalions were together again as Tenth Infantry Brigade Combat Team under command of First Lieutenant General John Fetterman who had been acting commanding general since October 10th of that year when Colonel James Klinkhammer took over command from General George Armstrong Custer Jr.. On January 1st of 1971 both battalions were reorganized into their present form - First & Second Brigades under Commandant Rear Admiral Harry Esmond who had also been acting commanding general since October 10th of that year when Colonel James Klinkhammer took over command from General George Armstrong Custer Jr.. On September 11th 1984 two companies from A Company 3rd Battalion 4th Marines were deployed to Panama City Beach for Operation Neptune's Spear II during which they rappelled down onto shoreline during a military exercise known as Cavalry Raiding Exercise Bravo One Zero Two at Isla Nublar Peninsular where they engaged enemy forces occupying landmines detonating them resulting in three killed and thirteen wounded including one officer) this event is considered miraculous because not one Marine or soldier died while serving
