Papillion is a town in east-central Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Papillion was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540. He named it "Isla de la Cabeza" and thought the headwaters of the Red River were there. A post office called Papillion was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1907. The town began as a rural community on the south side of the Platte River about one mile (1 km) west of its current site. The land for the town was donated by Judge Julius Jepson and others who had purchased it from local farmers during Kansas' territorial period in 1854-1855. Famed Omaha military general John Prenticeorth developed much of what is now Papillion while living here between 1865 and 1870; he donated land for a railroad station, village hall, and other public buildings which remain today as some of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. In 1898 an Act to consolidate several small communities into one new city was approved by Congress but never ratified by Nebraska's Territorial Legislature; this created Omaha instead with papillion as its lone small community within its boundaries. In 1905 farmsteads around present day Papillion were consolidated with those around Norfolk in nearby Osborne County under a single authority known as "the Rural Municipality." This arrangement continued until 1935 when separate municipalities were reestablished within Omaha following the regional reorganization that took place after World War II adjustment of state government patterns across America due to then ever increasing suburban growth across regions nationwide. By 1970 all rural areas had been abolished except for Norfolk where it still operated as an enclave surrounded by city limits

Papillion is a town in Nebraska, United States. The population was 806 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Papillion were the Pawnees. They were nomadic hunters and gatherers who roamed the Great Plains around 4,000 years ago. In 1868, when Dakota Territory was created from parts of Nebraska and Iowa, Papillion became a part of that territory. The first school in Papillion was opened in 1870 by Mrs. John Auldridge and her daughter Frances Auldridge. By 1896, there were eleven schools in Nebraska providing education for grades one through twelve with an enrollment of 2,611 students strong; however, only two high schools remain open today: Papillion High School (now known as Ponca City Schools) and Omaha-Council Bluffs High School (now known as Lincoln Central High). In 1903, the Nebraska Legislature passed an act which granted land east of Papillion to settle settlers called the "Papillonians". The new town site had been donated by Wm Halsey Napier and his wife Jennie Bemis Napier on their farm just west of present day Scott Road/High Street. The original name for the community was "Naperville", but it soon anglicized to "Papillon" after nearby Fort Recovery Barracks became home to Ulysses S. Grant's Army during World War I (1865-1918). On November 12th 1905 – about three months after its founding – residents voted to rename their town "Papillion" after then Governor William Hance Chapin." The post office at Papillion was established on July 9th 1907 by Elisha Brownell Jr., also known as Eli Brownell or Mr. Brownell because he owned most of what is now downtown Papillon Township including both streets and buildings still standing today including $5 worth of postage stamps that are still currently being used! What made this decision so special? After all local businesses closed up shop due to prohibition – something that had not happened before in this area – Mr. Brownell decided that he would collect all outgoing mail so that no one would be left out during prohibition days! He did this until his death in 1912 at age 82 years old! Today many street namesakes throughout rural America feature silhouettes or images of Mr .Brownell on storefronts as a reminder that even though Prohibition ended nearly seventy years ago his legacy lives on! A post office named Roosevelt wasn't established until 1911–12 thanks to efforts by local resident Milton Thurston Roosevelt III who collected outgoing mail from miles around for mailing purposes back then! Unfortunately less than 1% ever got sent! However future presidents Harry Truman and Richard Nixon both received mail here from far away during their time asNebraska Governors :) In 1932 Marshal Homer Tinkle took over control of law enforcement from county sheriff James Fenton when Fenton refused NTAA orders not to transport alleged Communists arrested during early 1930s Red Scare without warrants; later career criminal Tinkle ran afoulof several top county officials before finally retiring effective May 6th 1973 at age 79 years old due to ill health caused by prostate cancer which has since metastasized into lymphoma & multiple myeloma...Tinkle died Wednesday morning surrounded by his family at Our Lady’s Hospital where he had been hospitalized since December 17th 1978 following surgery related […]
