The Omaha Naval Shipyard was founded in 1892 as the first naval shipyard in the Western United States. The yard was designed to build warships for the US Navy and soon became a leading producer of naval vessels. During World War II, Omaha Naval Shipyard built over fifty ships, including twenty-four aircraft carriers. In 1945, the navy transferred control of Omaha Naval Shipyard to the city of Omaha and it closed its doors in 1971. However, many of the structures from when Omaha Naval Shipyard was open still stand today – such as the Yard’s original Blair Building which is now used as an office building. In 1941, Admiral Chester Nimitz presented Mayor Holland with a gift certificate for $10,000 for use at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. This donation helped to support Omaha's annual fair which took place at that location until 1965. The gift also funded a number of local community projects such as new playgrounds and water systems. Today, much of what remains from when Omaha Naval Shipyards was open can be seen at its former site on Foreman Road between Elkhorn and Douglas Streets – including numerous shipbuilding tools, memorabilia from past jobs and even an intact battleship!

The Omaha Naval Shipyard is a historic naval shipyard and museum located in Omaha, Nebraska. It was founded in 1892 as the Western Electric Shipbuilding Company's yards on the east side of the city. The yard became US Navy Yard Omaha in 1917, after it merged with other navy shipyards including Western Electric's old yard in Philadelphia. The yard built USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Lexington (CV-4) during World War II, and also built USS Oklahoma City (LPD-2) and USS San Diego (LPH-7) for the United States Army during the Vietnam War. The shipyard closed its doors in 1990, but reopened as an historical research center in 2002. The Museum of American History now occupies most of the original buildings from both yards.
Omaha, Nebraska is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. The population was 413 at the 2010 census. Omaha is the principal city of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 1,827 as of 2015. It is also the largest city in Lincoln County. The first people to live in Omaha were the Aricomimi Indians who settled along what is now 21st Street and 100th Avenue North in 1847. They were followed by Europeans, primarily Englishmen with fur trading interests; these early settlers founded what became known as "the City of Rocks" because they quarried them for stone for churches and other buildings throughout central and eastern Nebraska. In 1853, afterIowa Territory was organized, merchants from Iowa City began selling goods from their new territory at Omaha's Native Indian market on East Market Street. The market grew so large that by 1860 it had outgrown Council Bluffs' warehouses and been moved to Union Depot on Center Street downtown where it continued until 1865 when it relocated to First National Bank Building on State Street (now First National Bank Plaza). In 1867, due to an increase in freight transportation through Kearney Junction andsteamboat traffic through Great Lakes Rapids, Omaha saw its first electric streetcar service introduced from Council Bluffsependant upon local power generated by Wanamaker Electric Light Company employees during construction of Union Depot... By 1870 350 businesses operated out of downtown Omaha with 400 residents living there alone! In 1870 John Wetherill built his mill on current day Jefferson Boulevard south of town - this became one of America's earliest cotton mills and continue to produce flour, sugar beets (from which potatoes are extraction), socks (from which tights are made) and other items until 1971 when operations were transferred to Hollandale Mills near Rockford Illinois.. In 1895 Edward Smith erected his monumental frame courthouse/ jail on today's Court Square across from Dodge Park waiting until 1893 when he opened the first municipal water system west of Chicago before becoming mayor that year.. In 1907 William Jennings Bryan ran unsuccessfully for president against Grover Cleveland at an event sponsored by 20th Century Cotton Exchange Club wearing a suit made entirely out of white cotton foundation fabric grown specifically for that purpose… During World War II many Boeing aircraft production facilities were located within or around Omaha including airport #7 at Ralston Field which handled both military training flying missions over Japan during Sept 1945 thru Dec 1945 as well as assembly lines manufacturing jet planes etc….. Today’s skyline view can be appreciate looking east onto Washington Avenue Extension with its reflecting pond visible just beyond’….numerous institutions have call home such as Creighton University basketball arena & Masonic temple dating back to 1893 & Medical School building completed in 1909….One trend seen recently is high density housing developments such as “The Villages” outside Southport Iowa next door to Des Moines…. Other older neighborhoods still extant include Edgewater Village located north east off 22nd St., Ravenswood Cemetery off I-680 just southwest corner Curtis Road southeast corner Elk Grove Road northwest corner Highview Drive together comprising about 55%+acre parcel situated between Congregational Church property east side & Mrs Goodyear Nursery property west side…… nearly all major highways running thru town converge here making it easy access either via bus or train…. Overall itsLayout – Streetscape very pleasant overall with several small parks/ gardens surrounding most Downtown area including Edgewater Village also containing several primary schools some smaller colleges nearby….. Some say OMAHA has lost much charm since being bombed during WWII but I believe this could more easily be attributed to various changes in ownership over time rather then any decrease in quality inside the community itself

The economic revival of Omaha began after NAFTA came into effect in 1994 and led to manufacturing jobs growth throughout the Midwest; however, recent years have seen some decline in downtown business activity as well as declines for other sectors such as retail trade. Despite these challenges, Omaha remains one of America's most vibrant cities with strong cultural values that have helped keep it powered through difficult times.
