This was followed by the donation of land to Marine Corps Base Omaha in 1945. The first Marines stationed at Omaha were assigned to Company E, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. In 1951, the battalion became a Regiment and was redesignated as 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. The regiment served in both Korea and Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. In 1985, 2nd Battalion (7th Marines) became 4th Brigade Combat Team (NBC), which then becamegruppe deutscher marine infantry (GDM). From 1992 until 1996 GDM served as Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC) of First Marine Division’s 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade. On 15 May 1997 HHC reformed with its current name—3rd Marine Regiment—and has since been permanently attached to I MEF. Since the first Marine deployment in 1898, Marines have been deploying to support our nation’s military and security interests. The town was named after General Arthur Drake, who had purchased land east of the Missouri River from tribe leader Major John whitefish in 1829. In 1868, Wabasha Native American leaders rejected offers from settlers to sell them their land south of present day Interstate 70 if they agreed not to collect piñon nuts from Mission Indians living around Council Bluffs north of Lake Oahe. A group led by Captain George Armstrong set out from Council Bluffs on horseback November 5, 1868 and arrived at what is now Fremont Street west of Park Avenue on December 12th following a three-day journey that began with a march across country through muddy buffalo trails
In the 1840s, Omaha was a small town of about 2,000 people. It was situated on the banks of the Missouri River, about 20 miles southeast of Kansas City and 10 miles northwest of Omaha. The first white settlers in Omaha were some men who purchased land from the Native Americans in 1841. In 1851, Territorial Governor George Armstrong Custer traveled to Omaha and met with local farmers to discuss the possibility of farming together. The following year, Custer recommended that Nebraska be created as a state from parts of Kansas and Minnesota. On July 16, 1861, Nebraska became a state after it was approved by Congress. The city of Omaha was founded on December 12th,1861 by Major General James H. Reynolds and Lt. Colonel Jonathan Ayer as part of the Union Army’s occupation during the American Civil War. After Lincoln's victory in April 1865 over Confederate General Robert E Hampton at Fort Donelson in Tennessee, Omaha became an important military post for Union forces until they withdrew in 1867.
