The first permanent settler in Omaha was Captain John Fetterman, who built a trading post on the site in 1854. In 1865, Omaha became the capital of Nebraska Territory; during its time as the capital, it experienced significant development including new construction of buildings and a canal system that helped increase trade within the territory. The city's nickname is "The City of Bridges." Omaha is located at 45°N 91°W (US: -95°W), about halfway between Chicago and Des Moines across Iowa State Route 20. As of 2010, it had an estimated population of 128,600 residents. The metropolitan area covers 536 square miles (1,272 km2) with an estimated population of 2 million people according to the 2016 census estimates. The earliest settlers in what would become Omaha were farmers looking for land to grow crops near water sources or rich soil for building materials. By 1856 there were three settlements: Bellevue on Delaware River about seven miles northwest of downtown; Holland on High Rock Hill about five miles northeast; and Rochester on Rosebud Creek about six miles southwest from town center. On November 6th that year Capt John Fetterman set out from Bellevue with his family as pioneers when they arrived at what is now known as Pioneer Square in downtown Omaha along Washington Avenue just east of Kearney Street – this location would be occupied by Union Pacific Railroad’s main depot later that year when they began construction on their line from Council Bluffs to Lincoln Depot along Washington Avenue – shortly before Nebraska Territory was created in 1861! Fetterman’s company represented many early arrivals to this new land – he himself had married into one such family soon after arriving hereabouts. His wife Esther also came overland with him and eventually bore children here – all but one born while they were living at their original settlement site until 1872 when they moved back eastward across the Arkansas River into Chelsea Township where they resided until her death in 1906 aged 86 years old! Mrs Fetterman may have been responsible for introducing some newer strains of wheat varieties grown today among other things! On December 1st 1860 two days after Captain John Fetterman contacted USGS Surveyor George Tilton regarding land west central Nebraska north-northwest Kansas etc., Acting Governor James Kapp assigned JH Frick & Co., surveyors working under direction from Special Agent Edward Cushing (who had arrived earlier that month), platting 16 lots upon which 8 families lived viz: Fremont 3 lots; Noyes 4 Lots; Peck 3 lots; Rice 2 Lots; Townsend 1 lot….
