North Platte, Nebraska is a town in Osborne County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 798 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Fremont, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in North Platte was Levi Coffin in 1859. North Platte was platted in 1868 by John Pemberton and platting off of what is now the eastern edge of Osborne County. The town name may be derived from "north" because it adjoins Canada on three sides and "flat" because it had no hills or mountains to provide cover for settlers during the early years. The town first attracted attention when Major General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle near Fort Atkinson on November 15, 1876. A group of soldiers under Custer's command camped at what is now North Platte on November 16th and 17th while they awaited reinforcements that would arrive from Fort Riley to help them fight against Indian forces located east of Plains Dragoons Creek. On November 19thCuster's force attacked an encampment of Native Americans near present day North Platte and within minutes all 23 men associated with his unit had been killed or captured including Custer himself. For much of the next year residents of North Platte continued to wonder where their general had gone and what happened to his troops. In February 1880s two more major battles took place along the Missouri River north east of present day Omaha between Union forces led by Ulysses S Grant and Confederate units commanded by General Robert E Lee; both engagements resulted in heavy losses for both sides but neither side emerged victorious. In 1886 local resident Fenton Young founded a grocery store in town which quickly became successful due to its low prices and wide variety of products available at that time. By 1890 there were over fifty stores operating in North Platte with a total population size exceeding one thousand people. During this time several new industries began emerging such as paper Making, Lumberjacking, Mining (especially silver), Grain Elevation, Cheese production etc.; these businesses helped contribute significantly to growth throughout late nineteenth century Osborne County until World War I when many withdrawing American soldiers destroyed most all these enterprises leaving behind hollowed out towns with few people left behind to maintain them.. During World War II many residents fled south into Dodge City so as not too become targets for Japanese bombers flying over Sioux City daily; however most residents returned home before hostilities ended on September 2nd 1945 after Japan capitulated following months long war effort culminating with their surrender atop Mount Fuji in Japan.. Following World War II many citizens decided against returning back to their former occupations; instead they turned their attention towards agriculture which has remained a dominant force here ever since; today agriculture employs nearly seventy percent of all workers here making it one Of THE most important economic sectors here! In 1969 local resident Donny Ferguson opened up what would become America's first chain restaurant named Fargo's BBQ which quickly became known throughout central Nebraska for its great food and friendly atmosphere!
