North Platte is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 906 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Missouri River and its namesake, North Platte Creek. The first permanent settler in what is now North Platte was David Hendrickson in 1851. Hendrickson built a log cabin on the south side of the creek. A post office was established at North Platte in 1853, and remained in operation until 1907. The first school in North Platte was built on Broadway Street in 1865 by Mrs. John Laddington. It served as a day-school for students from Kearney and other districts north of Omaha City limits until 1872 when it became an evening school under instructions from the Omaha Board of Education. In 1903, a group of farmers banded together to form the Kearney Commercial Federation to improve irrigation systems along the river near their village of Kearneyville. They named their organization after Northwestern Nebraska's capital city, Lincoln (the original name for North Dakota). The federation purchased land east of present-day North Platte and began building ditches, bridges and other improvements which would later become known as "The Great Ditch Project." In 1908 they also founded the Northern Pacific Railroad to bring goods closer to their village through what is now Kearney County; this helped spur economic development within today's town while also providing much-needed transportation infrastructure that still remains valuable today. In 1916 Union Station was completed at what is now downtown North Platte; this marked the beginning of Amtrak service into Nebraska via Laramie & South Sioux City Railway Company mainline outposts located just east of town Limits; these outposts were eventually replaced by Amtrak stations at Hastings & Union Station before continuing on downline into Iowa (& Chicago) during both World War II (& Korean War) respectively A new downtown mall opened up around 2000 as part of an effort by Mayor Bob Doherty to revitalize both business district & residential areas dating back over 50 years ago Today many businesses have dropped anchor or moved away altogether due largely to competition coming from larger rural communities like Beatrice, Deerfield & Bellevue who've all sprung up since then with little or no corresponding growth within those neighboring towns
