The North Platte Army Post Office was established in 1878 as the first post office in Nebraska. The current building, located at 9th and Farnam Streets, served as the post office until it closed in 1984. The North Platte Army National Guard was organized on December 15, 1908. It originally consisted of three companies: the 1st Battalion (Hawkeye), 2nd Battalion (Citizen), and 3rd Battalion (Lincoln). The battalion was redesignated the 4th Infantry Regiment on November 16, 1912. On October 12, 1916, the regiment was doubled in size when it became the 5th Infantry Regiment. On February 10, 1920, it was redesignated as the 6th Infantry Regiment and then as the 7th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1928. On September 5, 1944—just weeks before World War II began—the regiment became part of the 82nd Airborne Division and activated at Fort Riley Kansas. After training for two months at Ft Worth Texas, it landed in Normandy on June 9 following D-Day invasion. The regiment fought throughout Europe until May 1945 when it demobilized at Frankfurt am Main Germany. The regiment re-activated in Nebraska on November 10 following World War II and served until 1947 when it disbanded again.

By 1970, North Platte was home to over 10,000 residents and its economy was based primarily on services such as education and health care. In that year an agreement was made between United States forces under General John Custer and two British entrepreneurs named James Halliday and Alfred Nobel for the exploration of oil resources in north central Kansas Territory. Halliday became interested in this opportunity when he learned about an existing well near milepost 12 on the Santa Fe Trail. He quickly developed a drilling operation at Sully Head prospecting field which produced some wells but did not produce enough oil to justify further investment or development beyond these initial discoveries. Halliday then sold his interest to Nobel who also developed another well at Sully Head but failed to find significant quantities of oil until 1902-1903 when he drilled a new well called Black Jack (locally known as “Champion”) that yielded some 8 barrels per day (bpd). This well positioned North Platte firmly withinthe Golden Ageof American Oil Production where companies like Shell bought into this industry beginning in 1901 Analysts at Columbia Petroleum Company pointed out that there were many similar prospects across much of western Kansas so it seemed likely that there would be future finds which could justify further investment . However it would not happen untilTexaco leased land adjacentto Chisholm County seat Dayton for their own drilling program starting circa 1911 providing access easterly from Wichita Falls TX through Oklahoma City OK As developments proceeded along Keystone Avenue since 1903 Wabash Pipeline Company had been constructin Wichita Falls with crude products transported easterly via railcar from Texaco Field , finally terminating at Marshall Field IL
