Small batch coffee history in Norfolk, Nebraska begins with the first coffee shop in the town in 1892. The first business in town was a grocery store and it served Ethiopian coffee. In 1912, the first cafe opened in town and it was called the Norfolk Coffee House. It served organic coffee and had a small garden to grow food for its customers. The next year, the original building burned down so the cafe moved to a new location on Elm Street. In 1915, a bakery opened in town and it was called The Baker’s Dozen. It made croissant doughnuts and sells them along with Italian iced tea, lattes, espresso drinks, pastries etc. From 1916-1920, there were two butcher shops in town and they both served fresh meat products including ham, cheese etc. In 1922, a post office was established in town and it operated until 1954 when it closed down because of budget cuts by local officials. After that point, there were only two stores left serving small batch coffee until 1970 when Norwich Coffee Company Incorporated reopened their doors with their own smallbatch roaster/bakery).

Its namesake was George Norris who served as Mayor of Omaha from 1912 to 1916 and donated land for what would become downtown Norwich.
