The Norfolk Naval Shipyard was founded in 1887 and became a mainstay of the United States Navy. The yards built some of the most advanced warships in history, including USS Constitution and USS Maine. In 1957, the yard closed its doors for good after years of decline. But it reopened in 1990 as the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division and has continued to play an important role in naval warfare ever since. Today, Norfolk is home to 13 active ships and 8 mothballed vessels belonging to various navies around the world. The shipyards have produced more than 1,500 sailors and Marines who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea, Caribbean countries and other theaters throughout history. Many of these men and women are buried at sea or on land near the shipyards where they worked during their careers. One such military veteran is PFC Jeremiah Witherspoon from Portsmouth, NH who served with Company A-1/5th Marine Regiment during Operation Neptune’s Spear – which was a campaign fought against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan between 2001-2002. Witherspoon recalls that he had no idea what he was getting when he received his gift from his family members back home: “I was completely surprised when I got my package from my parents!
