The Nebraska National Guard, also known as the Omaha National Guard or simply the National Guard, is a unit of the United States military composed of veteran and reserve soldiers from Nebraska. The National Guard was organized on October 15th, 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln in order to provide manpower for the Union during the American Civil War. It played an important role in many battles and campaigns throughout that conflict, including Battle of Gettysburg and Vicksburg. The original members were men who had volunteered to serve in the militia on April 12, 1851. In 1912, the Nebraska legislature passed an act authorizing the organization of an army reserve using military forces from other states and counties in Nebraska. On October 1, 1912, the Norfolk National Guard became a state guard unit under the jurisdiction of the Nebraska Department of Military Affairs.

The National Guard has a long history of providing support to our nation. From its inception in 1792 until the present day, the guard has played an important role in America’s defense. The guard was created as part of President George Washington’s push for a more constabulary-like national police force. The first national guard troops were raised in 1792, and served briefly before being disbanded. It wasn’t until 1812 that the 1st U.S. Infantry was sent to fight at Yorktown Peninsula during the War of 1812. After that initial victory, the army grew increasingly reliant on the National Guard to provide essential services such as security and transport. In 1861, Congress passed a bill authorizing the president to call up all uniformed citizens into service for three years in case of war with Great Britain. This new law called for 1,500 men per state (later increased to 3,000). Over time, the National Guard has become an integral part of American society and culture. Some key aspects of Guardsmen’s history include their roles in both World Wars I and II; their unique mixture of military and civilian obligations; their contribution to patriotic ceremonies such as Fourthof July parades and Memorial Day services; and their use in homeland defense exercises such as Operation Neptune Spear and Jade Helm 15 . Today, members from all 50 states are mobilized through local units called battalions or brigades structure which are composed of drill teams plus Headquarters Company/Executive Officer (COE/EO) commanded by a Colonel or Major General officer like Brigadier General or Lieutenant Colonel who is also responsible for battalion/brigade operations tactical command center located at one or more brigade combat headquarters (BCH). The National Guard has been providing troops and support to the United States for centuries. The first national guard units were raised in 1792 as part of the Continental Army. In 1861, the Union states seceded from the United States and formed their own nation, which authorized the raising of a national guard unit. The first uniformed national guardsmen arrived in time for the American Civil War in 1861. From 1865-1868, a separate army was raised to support federal troops fighting in the war, but this army also consisted of civilian volunteers. After the war ended, these volunteer units were merged into regular U.S. military forces and are still present today as part of The National Guard Bureau (NGB).
Norfolk, Nebraska is a town in Lancaster County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1887 by Norwegian immigrants. The post office in Norfolk was founded on December 24, 1887. The first settlers were Jens Kapp and his wife Sigrid Haugland. The Norfolk Agricultural Experiment Station was established here in 1915 by the US Department of Agriculture as part of the American Agricultural Research Project. In 1922, the town became a city and retains its distinction as one of America's " smallest" cities with a population over 1,000 people only once since it regained its charter from the city government on July 1, 1984. Norfolk is also home to two colleges: Norwich-based Eastman School of Commerce & Business Administration and Lincoln-based Creighton University which merged in 2002 with Omaha Community College to form Creighton University Omaha Campus.
