In the early 1900s, Norfolk, Nebraska was the site of one of the most important maritime festivities in America. The community staged a series of celebration events known as "Marine Days." These events were designed to promote trade and friendships between sailors and locals. In addition to traditional boating and fishing activities, these festivals included dances, carousing, and exhibitions of local art. During Marine Days, towns throughout the region came together to provide supplies for their naval vessels and parade their brightest citizens along the waterfront. Sailors from all over America visited Norfolk during these days of festivity. One such sailor was John C. Fremont, who stopped in town on his way home from a visit to China. Fremont was so impressed with the town's infrastructure that he decided to spend some time there and learn more about its maritime history. Fremont's travels led him eventually to become president of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Navigation Company (now part of American Cruise Lines). When he took office in 1887, Omaha had only two steamboats – both serving as ferry boats between Omaha and Council Bluffs – but by 1890 it had developed into one of Omaha's leading shipping cities. Fremont helped develop this city's port into one of America's most flourishing commercial centers; he also built up its merchant fleet through purchases from other ports around the country. Norfolk's role in this developing city is further evidenced by its status as Commodore Thayer's Headquarters during Commodore Perry's final voyage across Lake Erie in 1837-38. This event marked a turning point for Norfolk as an inland seaport; it became home not just to merchants but also military commanders responsible for strategic decisions made along Lake Erie’s vast borders. During Commodore Perry’s absence from town (he went onshore at Buffalo), Mayor Jepson ordered workmen - many recruited from Norwich - to improve dockspace inside City Hall Square where Perry would have landed his ship should he have sailed back out again after reaching Canada (and ultimately destroying Detroit). As a result of these efforts, Portsmouth residents were able to enjoy access not justto their captain’s flagship but alsoto his stores ashore! Norfolk has since experienced several waves of development: first becoming an agricultural center due to increased demand for foodstuffs exported outport; then becoming an industrial center thanks largely to advances in transportation technologies; finally evolving into a bedroom community due largelyto suburban growth within walking distance of downtown core! Norfolk was founded by Captain John Smith in 1620 as a trading post on the banks of the Missouri River. The first permanent settler in Norfolk was Nicholas de la Motte, who arrived in 1635. In 1787, the town passed into English hands when Spain ceded it to Great Britain. It served as a military base during the American Revolution and was burned by U.S. forces in 1812. After the end of the war, Norfolk reverted back to British hands and became an important center for sugar refining and shipping. The town was abandoned until 1840, when it was re-established as a manufacturing center with a population of 5,000. The city declined after World War II but has since experienced an overall resurgence as a business and cultural center.
