The town has a rich history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. Norfolk has been inhabited by Native American tribes for more than two centuries and was known for its fertile soil and abundance of water resources. In 1909, Norfolk became a city and today it boasts a population of over 507 residents who live in five neighborhoods: Northside, Southside, Downtown, Old Towne and East End. The history of Norfolk began with its creation as a railway stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. At first there were just six settlers living in Norwich at this time; these consisted of four men from Iowa who had come west to work on the railroad, one woman from Illinois who had married an Omaha man working on the railroad, and one man from New York City who had come to help erect tracks. By 1881 all but three members of this original six-person settlement had died or moved away due to hardship during the Panic Of 1873 which caused prices for goods to plummet across most sectors of America. One person remaining behind was John Hatton who organized Plymouth Potash Company Limited out of his home using his pooled resources to produce potash (a type of fertilizer) for use by farmers throughout central Nebraska Territory. This company would grow into one of largest landowners in post-Civil War Nebraska with over 8 square miles (20 km²) patented land holdings including much valuable salt flats near present day Omaha. Over time Norwich grew furtherependent on railroads both mainline and secondary railways serving larger cities along their routes such as Omaha, Lincoln and Des Moines IA while also developing its own infrastructure such as schools, churches and hospitals serving local populations within commuting distance. In 1907 Norwich officially became an incorporated city under state law following incorporation by ordinance vote percentage over 60%.
