The Norfolk, Nebraska Coast Guard Historical Society has been collecting and displaying Coast Guard gifts from around the world since 1916. Many of these items have been donated by individuals or organizations who are interested in preserving Coast Guard history. Some of the most famous gifts from the Norfolk, Nebraska Coast Guard include a WWII service jersey worn by Adm. Chester Nimitz on board his flagship, USS carrier Yorktown; a set of lifejackets given to members of the Norfolk, Nebraska City Police Department in 1967; a collection of ancient coins from Greece and Rome; and an Apollo spacecraft guidance system donated to the Naval Aviation Museum in Washington D.C. In recent years, donations have also come from coast guard personnel stationed in Japan and Spain. Gift history can be traced back even further than that though - many early volunteers with the Norfolk coast guard were recruited during World War I when volunteer programs were reinstated following Armistice negotiations. The war had interrupted volunteer recruitment efforts so many times that many enlisted men ended up with their original unit instead of being assigned to new units once their enlistment was complete (or until they could be discharged). This led to some memorable gifts for those who served during World War I including a lifejacket from New York Harbor Patrolman George Halsey which he wore while serving aboard USS Lexington (CV-4) during her maiden voyage; a life jacket furnished by France’s Vichy government as part of an exchange program between America and Nazi Germany; and a U-boat target whistle which was used by crewmembers on LST-569 while operating off Norway’s coastline. After World War I, there was increased demand for volunteers among local fire departments as well as other emergency services throughout Omaha County. This led to organized groups such as “The Red Cross Boys” forming which would collect supplies such as food, clothing, gasoline etc., for donation to various groups across town or rural areas (often referred to as “the Good Samaritan Act”). These groups focused more on practical goods rather than historic artifacts such as military uniforms or ship models but they did contribute some interesting items over time including helmets worn by firefighters during fires suppression operations at North Dakota's Bakken oilfield in 1933; baseball caps distributed by American Red Cross chapters throughout Omaha County in support of flood relief efforts in 1942; 1940s era radios supplied by Omaha Electric Cooperative president Harry Suddenbaugh (); 1948 Donner Party supplies provided courtesy of Stroudsburg Area Chamber Of Commerce (); and more recently a T-shirt signed by former Mayor Tom Foley () after he placed bids for memorabilia at an auction held at The Rialto Theatre near Fremont, California (). In addition to individual donations or group contributions, other organizations have also contributed items over time including The Salvation Army which donated clothing and toiletries kits towardsening its goal of providing universal access to clean water worldwide through community Drinking Water Distribution Programs (); Navy League member Gene Cline collected surplus electronics equipment formerly used by Naval Air Station Fallon;; retired Capt. Rick Cannondon turned his home into Auctions Incorporated where he sold items related to his career with the United States Coast Guard (such as buttons commemorating deployments along the Pacific Rim); Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer offered items relating to his movie production company,,among others;; Stroudsburg Area Chamber Of Commerce offered several pieces featuring local businesses within its collection;; Western Illinois University offered coffee mugs inscribed with phrases like "I'm From Norfolk" ;and Moreland School District accepted donations ranging from canned goods To tools made specifically for educators (). A large percentage of this gift history comes directly from individuals who donate what they know or assume may be valuable assets - often family members or friends are known collectors themselves who will not hesitate offer valuable pieces that may otherwise go unappreciated (). The town has been named after Norfolk Island, which is an Australian island located in the Indian Ocean. Norfolk is home to the Norwich Railroad Museum and several local businesses including the Norfolk Steak House and Oyster Bar. The museum has collections of locomotives and cars from the Norwich & Omaha Railway; as well as supplies used by railroads across America during the 19th century.
