In 1945, the United States Army deployed in Norfolk, Nebraska as part of World War II. The Norfolk-based 5th Infantry Division was among the first units to arrive in Europe and fight in the war. After completing its training, the division sailed for Naples, Italy on October 25, 1944. It arrived there on November 8 and began combat operations against Nazi Germany. The division played a significant role in Allied victory during World War II and remains one of America’s most decorated units today. The 5th Infantry Division also deployed to Okinawa in 1945 and played an important role in that island’s defense against Japanese forces. The unit has been awarded many medals, including six Purple Hearts and two Gold Stars for Valor. In addition to its military decorations, the division has also received numerous civilians awards from local citizens who were affected by its actions during World War II. These recipients include a large number of civic organizations who have served as honorary members of the unit since its inception. Norfolk, Nebraska is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Nebraska. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Norfolk is notable for its association with Captain John Smith, who discovered and named the area that now includes Norfolk after his voyage around America in 1619. Norfolk has been inhabited by humans since at least 6200 BC. In 1868, a post office was established in what is now Norfolk. The first settlers arrived in 1876 and built a log cabin on the site of present-day Norwich High School. The town's first store opened in 1879. A school district was organized in 1889 and Norfolk became an incorporated village in 1912. The city of Omaha was founded near Norfolk by George Bird Griggs and others during World War I to serve as a military supply depot for American troops fighting on the front lines overseas. After Omaha's creation, many residents moved to Norwich because of its close proximity to other large cities and businesses within walking distance or easy access by car or train. In 1977, Norwich became one of eighteen towns across Nebraska designated as Area 5 for efforts to promote economic development within their boundaries through community involvement and entrepreneurship programs such as job fairs, business incubation centers, marketing workshops, and public hearings attended by representatives from local government officials, business owners,and citizens to discuss issues related to growth potential within their boundaries

The most significant event from Norfolk's history is the Battle of Hampton Roads on December 13-14, 1862 which helped lead to the Union victory over Confederate forces at Fort Donelson.
Norfolk was founded in 1854 as a small village on the banks of the Missouri River. It grew rapidly into one of Nebraska's most important cities, becoming the seat of government for both Norfolk and Logan Counties. The city experienced rapid growth during the years following World War I, growing by 50 percent in just two decades. In 1925, Norfolk became the first city in Nebraska to pass a bond issue to finance its own expansion. The city's success encouraged others to establish themselves in Norfolk, and by 1930 it had become one of Nebraska's largest cities with a population of over 100,000. The decade that followed saw significant growth in economic sectors including manufacturing, transportation and services. However, during the Great Depression Norfolk faced significant economic challenges which led to several reductions in its workforce and mayor John Ahern declaring a state of emergency in 1933. This led to increased violence and crime within the city limits which ultimately caused local businesses to go bankrupt. In 1935 Ahern resigned from his position after being elected governor of Nebraska. After leaving office he developed an extensive infrastructure program within Norwich which helped improve community amenities such as parks and libraries while creating new jobs throughout the cityscape
